Holland Youth Advisory Council
HYAC (Holland Youth Advisory Council) was formed in 2003 to provide the City Council with input on youth related issues.
HYAC exists:
• To further develop its members' leadership skills
• To formulate and discuss recommended community projects and activities for youth
• To assist municipal leaders in developing and implementing strategies for youth
• To promote youth participation in city government and community service
HYAC (Holland Youth Advisory Council) consists of the Core Council and three subcommittees: Recreation, Social Services, and Special Events.
Recreation: Their main focus is to plan fun events for youth. Members have planned a middle school bowling night, promoted the creation of an outdoor ice-skating rink, and created the annual 5k “Run of the Mill.”
Social Services: This subcommittee addresses issues of social concern to youth and the Council. In the past, they created a Peer Refusal Skills curriculum for middle school students, taught by high school students called, “Raise Your Voice.” They have also tackled the homeless youth issue and promoted efforts to go green.
Special Events: The Special Events Subcommittee plans large city wide events to benefit the community. In the past, the Special Events committee has held Teen Summits and Youth Expos. They have also supported the Homeless Youth Task Force by holding a benefit auction to raise money for the Barnabas House.
Youth on Boards: The Youth on Boards students sit on various adult Boards and Commissions, including the West Michigan Airport Authority, the Downtown Development Authority, the Human Relations Commission, the International Relations Commission, Parks & Recreation Committee, the Neighborhood Improvement Commission, the Planning Commission, the Police/Community Relations Committee, the Sustainability Committee and the Teen Court Board.
